Airbus A350XWB Wing Equipping Facility Construction – Waste Management
The challenge provided by Airbus was to set up a waste strategy with waste procedures and a site waste management plan to ensure waste minimisation across the entire project.
The waste cost for the A380 Wing Equipping Facility build was over £2m and our goal was to develop systems and tools to bring the waste bill down for the new A350XWB Wing Equipping Facility. The final waste bill for the A350XWB Build was just over £250k which was a major saving for Airbus. On average 93.73% of waste was diverted from Landfill resulting in over £300k savings in landfill tax.
This was achieved in the following ways:
Designing Out Waste at Source:
Working with the sub-contractors before they came to site to understand the type of waste that could be brought on to site by them through their own supply chain. Working in this way made the sub-contractors think differently as well as the supply chain and changes were made prior to delivery to ensure the minimisation of waste.
Return of packaging to suppliers.
Reducing re-using and recycling materials at 80% or greater including soil re-use, concrete crushed and re-used as aggregate, re-use of wood.
Tools developed to aid waste estimation
Recycling facilities on-site in welfare areas as well as in the skip areas including individual waste strategies for the individual subcontractor e.g. steel Erectors, Ground workers, cladders
Skip Checks to ensure all waste was being sorted correctly on site
Toobox Talks to encourage the team to recycle and to educate on the projects core values.
Continuous Improvement through regular meetings, poster campaigns and reporting.
